Urinary Tract Infection (UTI


Definition

A urinary tract infection is an infection in any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. It is most commonly caused by bacterial pathogens, especially Escherichia coli.


Etiology / Causes

  • Bacterial infection, especially E. coli.

  • Poor hygiene practices

  • Urinary retention or incomplete emptying

  • Catheterization

  • Diabetes mellitus

  • Sexual activity

  • Menopause (due to estrogen deficiency)


Signs and Symptoms / Clinical Features

  • Burning or pain during urination

  • Frequent urge to urinate, even when the bladder is empty

  • Cloudy or foul-smelling urine

  • Pelvic pain or lower abdominal discomfort

  • Fever and chills (in upper UTI)

  • Hematuria (blood in urine)

  • Malaise and general discomfort


Diagnosis

  • Urine routine and microscopy: Presence of pus cells, bacteria

  • Urine culture: Identifies the causative organism

  • Ultrasound or CT scan (if recurrent or complicated)

  • Complete blood count (CBC): To assess for systemic infection


Complications

  • Recurrent infections

  • Pyelonephritis (kidney infection)

  • Sepsis in severe cases

  • Renal damage if left untreated

  • Urethral stricture (rare)


Homeopathic Therapeutics

1. Cantharis

  • Indications: Sudden onset of intense burning during and after urination. Urging to urinate with only a few drops passed. Urine may be bloody and scalding.

  • Modalities: Worse from drinking coffee, urinating; better from warmth.

  • Useful in: Acute cystitis and urinary tract irritation with restlessness.

2. Apis Mellifica

  • Indications: Burning and stinging pain during urination, with frequent urge and scanty urine. Oedema or swelling in body may be present.

  • Modalities: Worse from heat, better from cold applications.

  • Useful in: UTIs with marked inflammation and swelling of urinary passages.
