Typhoid Fever




Definition:


Typhoid fever is a systemic infectious disease caused by Salmonella typhi, transmitted primarily through contaminated food and water. It is characterized by prolonged fever, abdominal pain, rose spots on the abdomen, diarrhea or constipation, and toxic appearance. It commonly affects areas with poor sanitation and hygiene.

  • Indications:

    • Indicated in later stages of typhoid with marked restlessness, anxiety, and burning pains.

    • Extreme prostration, thirst for small quantities, and offensive diarrhoea.

  • Physical Symptoms:

    • Pale face, sunken eyes, cold sweats, and desire for warmth.

    • Vomiting and diarrhea that exhausts the patient.

  • Modalities:

    • Worse after midnight, from cold, and when alone.

    • Better from heat and warm drinks.

  • Therapeutic Sphere:

    • Useful in chronic or relapsing typhoid, especially when there is collapse or sepsis-like picture.
